About The Burr family of Wilstead, Bedfordshire, England and Nebraska, USA
This is a tree of the BURR family who lived for many generations throughout the
18th & 19th Centuries in Wilstead in Bedfordshire. The Wilstead BURR family
came from Pulloxhill in the 17th Century - and in the South of the County of
Bedfordshire before the Pulloxhill generation - there are possibly links to
BURR breweries in Luton, but the present generations of the Wilstead BURRs can
be found both in Wilstead and in the U.S.A.
In the 18th and 19th Centuries, the BURR family members were very active in
village life in Wilstead, serving as Church Wardens at All Saints Parish Church
and in the many various capacities & organisations within the village. Mainly,
the family was concerned with farming but Census returns show us their numbers
included bakers, fish mongers and other trades people ~ and many of the women
were equally busy in the calling of making Bedfordshire lace. Literacy was the
norm for most of the family, from early 18th Century onwards, with girls
devoting as much of their childhood to learning their letters as the boys did.
We have added another branch that settled in Lancaster, PA. Just follow William
BURR 1 for this branch.
Although this tree specifically relates to the BURR family, we hope we haven't
neglected the female lines either and have a few links to other trees but we do
welcome family tree links, ammendments and corrections to any of the
information on the site. Please get in touch with Cathy, in England, should
you be interested in Wilstead, or any of the related Bedfordshire families you
see on this site (audreyjoycemcc@aol.com) and please check out the links below
to see what other information there may be.
Please have a look at the Wilstead History link below to see what else
there is on the people & history of Wilstead.
A note on spelling: BURR is the usual spelling of this name but in the
archives there are several spellings on various documents [notably BUR & BURRE]
and for simplicities sake we have used the spelling that we first found. The
surname will have come from France - BURRE [i.e. 'butter'] which suggests that
this branch were dairy farmers and came to England sometime following the
Norman Conquest in the 11th C [?]
